A sweet-toothed burglar has carried out two raids on Hitchin sweet shops overnight.

Police have received reports of burglaries at two sweet shops in Hitchin High Street between late on Sunday evening and the early hours of Monday morning.

The candy shops that were broken into are believed to be Merricks Sweet Box Candy Store and Mr Simms, a nostalgic chain retailer dedicated to retro and modern sweets, chocolate and American candy.

Hitchin Nub News contacted Herts police who issued the following statement: "Initial enquiries are currently being carried out.

"Anyone with information which may assist is asked to please contact police."

HNN understands no-one was injured during the break-ins.

Hitchin Nub News adds: We abhor any form of crime in our town, including break-ins. While, thankfully in this case, no-one has been injured, a break-in is still a serious crime and we will do all we can to try and help police find the culprit or culprits - and we would strongly urge anyone with information to contact officers investigating this case as soon as possible.

Hopefully the smartiepants thieves will not feel so clever when CCTV comes in candy to help catch them.

And please note there is no truth in the rumour that police are already looking for someone in confection with the burglary, or that there was a smoking gum, but as this is a serious crime we will not be looking to sugarcoat the truth and when the culprit is caught revenge will be sweet.
