PUBLIC health officials in Hertfordshire are looking at the Covid experiences of schools from other parts of the world, to draw-up local guidance for headteachers, including those in Hitchin.

A number of schools across the county including our town have had to close – fully or partially – in the run-up to the end of term, due to the need for pupils or staff to self-isolate.

PUBLIC top health chief is advising residents to be 'cautious' after the lifting of national Covid restrictions – as figures show a significant increase in cases in Hertfordshire, including Hitchin.

As our area gears up for 'Freedom Day' with Prime Minister Boris Johnson signalling a lifting of most Covid restrictions from July 19 – including the legal requirement to wear a face covering or to socially distance Hertfordshire's public health supremo Jim McManus has stressed that caution is still needed.

Herts County Council has drawn up a £9.6m 'recovery' strategy to support residents and businesses across the county including Hitchin in the wake of the Covid pandemic.

While vaccination rates may be high and hospital admissions low, estimates suggest that as many as 40,000 Hertfordshire residents could be suffering from 'long Covid'.
