Welcome to the last surviving Monitorial Schoolroom in the world, and a unique part of Hitchin's history.
Here at the British Schools Museum we tell the story of education from Georgian times through to the Second World War. Visit to tour our site from our Victorian Headmaster's House through to the Air Raid Shelter, or come and take part in "Live like a Victorian child" and experience a period lesson in costume, along with the chores they had to do!
During term time we are delighted to host school trips for Victorian or WWII visits, whilst on Half-Terms and Holidays we offer craft sessions for children. With a host of other events from town walks, to the Hitchin Children's Book Festival, to ghostly after-dark visits for Halloween, we warmly welcome all visitors to find the even that suits them.
We exist to continue the legacy of the British Schools for the people of Hitchin and beyond. As a charity set up, run, and supported by the people of Hitchin, we cannot thank you all enough for your continued support. Every visit, donation, volunteering hour, or school trip helps to preserve this unique and fascinating part of the history of the town, and of education nationwide.
