North Herts District Council have announced the suspension of all food waste collection services in and around Hitchin.

Announcing the decision on their social media channels they blamed the last minute cancellation on severe staff shortages affecting waste, recycling and street cleansing teams.

There's currently no indication as to how long these staff shortages will continue, however, Hitchin Nub News understands NHDC hope all services will be operating was normal by next week.

The statement read: "All food waste collection services have been suspended today (Friday 1 October) due to staff shortages.

"Please bring your food caddy in and present it again on your next scheduled collection day. We are sorry for any inconvenience caused and thank you for your understanding."

NHDC are advising residents that if they require extra capacity before their next collection, they can empty their caddy into to either their garden waste bin (if they have subscribed to the service) or their residual waste (purple) bin.

Fuel updates

Caddy issues follow further fuel shortages in our area, with the Esso garage on Nightingale Road and the Shell garage on Bedford Road completely out of fuel once again, as of Friday evening.
