Hitchin: Disgusting fly-tipping continues as investigation launched to find anti-social culprits

By Layth Yousif 29th Apr 2021

An abandoned motorcycle is the latest evidence of 'disgraceful' fly-tippers operating in our area.

Further fly-tipping has been revealed after Hitchin Nub News came across disgusting detritus at the weekend.

We reported that foul and filthy mattresses smelling of urine were discover in Pirton, near Hitchin.

However, North Herts District Council have confirmed that further rubbish was dumped in the area.

This included a motorcycle, as well as further beds that were abandoned nearer to Pirton that Nub News has seen.

NHDC service director Jeanette Thompson told Nub News: "We are aware of this incident and our environmental crime officers will be carrying out a thorough investigation to establish who was responsible.

"The waste, which consists of mattresses, a red BMW motorcycle and some children's bicycles, is currently being inspected, before our contractors collect it tomorrow, Tuesday.

"We take fly tipping very seriously.

"Anyone found to be committing a fly tipping or household waste duty of care offence will be fined.

"Please ensure that you always give your waste to a licenced waste carrier to ensure that it doesn't end up being fly-tipped."

As well as being unhygienic and a possible public health issue, the selfish fly-tipping blighted an area of natural beauty, full of fields and animals including sheep, as well as horses opposite.

Nub News spoke to horrified locals at the nearby Motte and Bailey pub in Pirton at the weekend.

"It's disgusting and a disgrace," a customer who wished to remain anonymous told us, adding "People who do this should be fined.

If you witnessed this fly-tipping, any information you can provide will greatly assist NHDC in their fight against this illegal activity. You can report evidence via their website.

If you come across any evidence of fly-tipping let us know at Nub News and we'll highlight this shameful blight on our area by ignorant people as well as alerting the relevant authorities.
