HITCHIN: Sold out signs have been posted in a number of petrol stations in our town after panic buying saw supplies run low this weekend.

The Esso garage on Nightingale Road ran out of fuel on Saturday afternoon following queues stretching back to the Grove Road roundabout in the morning.

An attendant at the garage told Nub Nub that they had sold out of their week's supply of fuel in a matter of hours, with every drop snapped up by anxious drivers - despite calls for calm by the government.

The Shell garage on Bedford Road also sold out of fuel by Saturday evening, with large queues on Stevenage Road for the BP garage as supplies ran low.

On Friday, Hitchin MP Bim Afolami called for calm amid panic buying in and around our town.

"The UK has plenty of petrol," he said, adding: "fuel will continue to flow. There is no need for anyone to panic buy."

However, Transport Secretary Grant Shapps ducked out of a planned event at a petrol station south of Hitchin after long queues formed at pumps.

While fuel giant Shell told Nub News that they were experiencing increased demand due to the panic buying.
