A controversial application to turn a popular Hitchin town centre theatre into flats has been withdrawn - after nearly 150 people objected to the proposals.

Plans had been submitted to North Herts District Council to turn the Market Theatre into three, two-bed flats, and two flats with one bedroom.

However, the town's community rallied around the theatre on Sun Street - which has been putting on popular shows as part of Hitchin's cultural scene for a quarter of a century - resulting in the plans being withdrawn after Nub News covered the story last week.

The theatre is a much-loved institution in Hitchin and since opening its doors in November 1996, the building has played host to more than 200 new shows over many thousands of nights.

Speaking to Nub News, theatre manager Glyn Doggett said: "We are thrilled to learn that the application has been withdrawn," while the theatre's artistic director, Kirk Foster added: "We cannot thank the Hitchin community enough for the love and messages of support that have been been received.

"At last look there were over 145 comments objecting to the planning application on the NHDC website - which is incredible."

A spokesperson from NHDC confirmed to Nub News: "We can confirm that the Market Theatre applications (20/03065/FP & 20/03066/LBC) have both been withdrawn."
