Hitchin Town FC's crowdfunding appeal receives £5k boost from family of much-loved Fred Andrews
Hitchin Town's crowdfunding campaign has received a £5k boost this week - thanks to a generous donation from a family honouring their late father.
The family of the much-missed Fred Andrews added a whopping £5k to the club's coffers in a bid to aid the Top Field outfit's survival.
Stalwart Fred was a wonderful servant to the Canaries, sadly passing shortly after this 93rd birthday back in May.
As the club's longstanding commercial manager Fred offered genuine warmth, kindness and traditional values to all he encountered as a most loyal and respected servant to Hitchin.
The donation was lodged on the club's Crowdfunder page and read: "Please accept this donation in memory of dad, Fred Andrews, who loved the club which gave him so much enjoyment. Tina Virgo and Mike Andrews."
The club launched their crowdfunding campaign in a bid to survive after a fall in revenues due to the Covid crisis, the lack of fans through the turnstiles and hefty bills for ground improvements.
Hitchin Nub News are big supporters of the Canaries and have backed the campaign from the start after we ran a story highlighting the problems the club faced.
We've charted the progress of their hugely successful campaign after the club received more than £15k donations in a matter of days
We also shared the heartwarming story of young Teddy Donnelly who is set to become Hitchin's version of Captain Tom
With the club about to reach their £25k target the Canaries have been able to book in tradespeople to start work shortly on repairing the main stand roof and the dilapidated former tea bar, which is collapsing.
Following the generous £5k the club added: "Thank you so much Mike and Tina."
