LEAGUE TWO: Stevenage 0-2 Newport County

Stevenage lost 2-0 at home to promotion-chasing Newport County in front of 2,733 at Broadhall Way on Saturday.

Two second half goals from Rob Street and Ryan Haynes saw the Exiles move into third place to send their 309 vociferous travelling fans into raptures at the Lamex.

Street turned in Dom Telford's low cross from close range two minutes after the break to put Newport ahead.

The visitors sealed three valuable points when Haynes' excellent curling strike from outside the box with 20 minutes remaining doubled the lead for Newport, in a rare flash of creativity on an otherwise attritional afternoon.

The victory extended County's unbeaten run to six games with boss James Rowberry saying after the match: "We came out of the traps second half and got the goals and it's a thoroughly deserved win from all aspects."

Paul Tisdale's side remain in serious danger of relegation, with Boro slipping to a perilous 23rd place.

While they are three points ahead of basement dwellers Oldham, Stevenage have played two matches more than the Latics.

Boro boss Tisdale reflected afterwards: "We're not getting the rub of the green - and we're not quite taking a deep breath when we need to, when we get in front of the opposition box.

"I really admired the way we played. We played as a real team.

"We have certainly got enough (to avoid relegation). We've just got to convert that into results. It's about results. But I like the team, I like the determination we showed, I liked the connection.

"I'm looking forward to Tuesday (against Northampton) already."
