Three places to visit in Hitchin during your daily lockdown walk

The town of Hitchin is still beautiful despite the ongoing Covid crisis.

As we move into February, it will be nearly a year since the coronavirus pandemic hit and we experienced the first of three national lockdowns.

While vaccines are giving everyone hope, for the foreseeable future, we still have to remain vigilant, meaning hands, face, space, as well as social distancing and only going out when essential, such as for shopping.

However the government does allow for exercise everyday, which for many will mean a nice walk.

Prior to lockdown Hitchin was a popular destination to visit for many from London and other areas, with its vibrant independent stores and picturesque market square, known as Market Place.

While these famed independents have had to shut as part of government restrictions, you can still wander around the town's evocative centre as part of your daily exercise routine.

So, here are three places to visit in our wonderful town during your permitted daily walk or exercise.

3) Walk up Windmill Hill

The views from the top of well worth the extra effort. From the town's highest point you can see for miles around, including the spire of St Mary's Church.

2) Marvel at the stunning Tudor and Georgian timbered frames and facades in the town centre

No lockdown walk – or visit to Hitchin - is complete without a stroll around our historic town centre.

Drink in the history as you walk on the evocative cobbled streets of the town centre. It's such a shame the town's wonderful independent scene is closed for the time being because of the pandemic, as many a visitor loved what they had to offer – from fine dining to original clothing and so much more in between.

1) Stroll around St Mary's Church and churchyard

The jewel in Hitchin's crown is our iconic 12th century church and the area next to the River Hiz. An oasis of calm where ducks and geese enjoy the placid tranquility.

A restorative antidote to today's challenges. And if it's dark, why not take a walk over to Queen Street and admire the views looking back down onto the floodlit church. Simply wonderful.

Let us know what you think? Where are your favourite walks in and around Hitchin?
