'We're over the moon!' says Hitchin Town FC after their crowdfunding appeal has reached a staggering £10k in a matter of days.

As Hitchin Nub News exclusively revealed last week the town's much-loved Canaries are facing a fight for survival.

The coronavirus crisis and the lack of fans clicking through the club's historic iron turnstiles on Fishponds Road have been tough for the Top Field outfit.

If you factor in extensive ground maintenance costs on top - Hitchin Town are facing their biggest challenge yet.

However, since launching their crowdfunding appeal in a bid to raise the £25k required to continue, the Canaries have been inundated with support.

While still needing a further £15k to reach the target the club told Hitchin Nub News: "We're absolutely over the moon with the support we've had from fans and locals – we really didn't expect to get anywhere near this total in the opening two weeks, let alone opening weekend!

"Now that we've secured the first £10k, we're able to use this money right away and we're doing so with work starting on the main stand roof later this month – it was an urgent job, so this crowdfunding effort has allowed us to get straight to work.

"We're hoping that we can keep the momentum up and reach the £25k target with time to spare, then anything on top of that would be used to complete more jobs around the ground that we've wanted to do but haven't been able to in recent years.

"We hope that the investment that the crowdfunders have given us will mean that Top Field will become a more enjoyable - and safe - place for local football fans to visit."
