As the busy Christmas week looms here's the latest from our popular Nub News columnist, A Churchwarden writes...

..............

As the fourth week of Advent begins with the lighting of the penultimate candle on the Advent Crown, the finishing touches are being made to preparations at St Mary's.

The magnificent tree and more festive garlands have been finished, and the crib will come out of storage to take its place from Monday, while the flower arranging team swings into action.

Floral displays in white for the nativity will appear to set the scene for Christmas Eve.

Safe St Mary's

Although these times are uncertain, we will try to continue with our plans for as long as is practical, so that all can access the Church.

Current safety measures including mask wearing and more ventilation with open doors make the most of the large space within the building.

St Mary's diary

On Wednesday the St Mary's Choir performed traditional carols for the Rotary service on the Riverside with Hitchin Band, and on Saturday at 1pm the choir's annual lunchtime promenade concert returns.

No need to book, just pop in throughout the hour for a break from Christmas shopping.

A lovely opportunity to enjoy some beautifully performed seasonal music.

On Sunday, after the usual morning Services, there's a 'triple bill' on offer: our informal Early Evening service returns at 5pm with a lively mix of Carols around the piano and 'open mic' for the musically audacious.

Then at 630pm a traditional Service of Sung Compline gives a chance for a quieter time of reflection.

Between these two services, St Mary's Bellringers will be ringing.

Christmas Eve

On Christmas Eve, the Crib service at 4pm is a Hitchin institution which we hope to continue, as the candles are lit.

The 'Nine Lessons' at 7pm is our own version of the service traditionally broadcast from King's College Cambridge, and ours could be watched on the Livestream at www.youtube.com/c/stmaryshitchin.

Midnight Mass takes us through to the start of Christmas Day, and the team will be up bright and early for the Christmas morning Communion, when the younger people can bring their presents along.

Colourful St Mary's

Our present to Hitchin is a stunning display of coloured lights on the east view of the Church on Friday and Saturday night, [December 17 and 18], from 630pm to 830pm.

With a little help from our friends, Tim and Chris, we're making the east view of the Church even more photogenic than usual for your delight.

We wish you a Happy Christmas, from all the St Mary's Team.
