An increasing number of people in Hitchin are aiming to buy a dog to boost their spirits as lockdown eases.
Yet the unprecedented rise in demand has sparked concerns that potential new owners may not be prepared for the added responsibility that comes with owning a canine.
Recent reports have stated the Kennel Club has seen a 180 per cent spike in enquries about dog ownership, while breeders have experienced a surge in demand for puppies.
However, Eileen Woolmer, dog lover and dog owner from Paws Fur & Fin pet shop on Bancroft urges caution to those who may be seriously thinking about purchasing a puppy.
Eileen - a well-known face to animal lovers in Hitchin, along with her mum Caroline - spoke to Nub News on Tuesday afternoon about the rise in doggy demand. "Lockdown has definitely made people think more about buying a puppy for company," she explained, adding: "We've had a number of requests and inquires about it.
"Although we sell dog food and a large range of dog accessories we don't sell dogs – but I can see why so many people are asking us about buying a puppy.
"As a dog owner and a dog lover, the beauty of dogs is that they are loyal. They offer friendship, companionship and social interaction - which can really help combat feelings of isolation. We've had all range of demographics coming in to ask our opinion on buying puppies.
"But what I would say is that potential dog owners have to understand owning a dog is a big commitment. A puppy isn't for lockdown - it's for life."
