AWARD-WINNING FILMMAKERS OF 'THE SWIMMERS' IN LIVE Q&A AT BROADWAY CINEMA & THEATRE

By Kim Munson 17th Nov 2022

On Tuesday 29th November, Broadway Cinema & Theatre will be hosting a live Q&A with the director and editor of Netflix film The Swimmers.

The film is based on the true story of sisters Yusra and Sarah Mardini who fled as refugees from war-torn Syria. When crossing the Aegean Sea, the dinghy carrying them and other refugees begins to sink and the sisters end up swimming in the sea for several hours, pulling the boat to safety until they are rescued. Once given asylum, Yusra is invited to join the refugee team at the Rio Olympics and the story follows her journey to the games.

Broadway is one of a select few cinemas showing the film, which will be followed by a live Q&A with the film's Director Sally El Hosaini, and Film Editor Iain Kitching. Sally El Hosaini is a Welsh-Egyptian film director and screenwriter with a string of awards to her name, including Most Promising Newcomer at the 2013 Evening Standard Film Awards, and her debut film My Brother the Devil won awards at Sundance Film Festival, Berlin International Film Festival and the BFI London Film Festival, amongst others. Iain Kitching (BFE) has been editing since 2000 and worked on Sally El Hosaini's debut film as well as The Swimmers. He has worked on both Emmy and BAFTA winning series, and has worked alongside big names such as Hans Zimmer, Danny Boyle, Sam Bain and Jesse Armstrong.

Jason Valentine, Venue Manager, Broadway Cinema & Theatre says: "Broadway Cinema & Theatre is delighted to welcome Sally El Hosaini and Iain Kitching for a live Q&A. To be one of only few cinemas screening The Swimmers is a testament to the great variety of programming at Broadway and we can't wait to watch this moving true-story brought to the big screen."

Tickets for The Swimmers including live Q&A are £19 each. The film is suitable for ages fifteen and up and has a runtime of 165 minutes not including a 30-minute Q&A following the film. The event takes place on Tuesday 29 November 2022 at 7.30pm.
