Bake Off returns to Hitchin Food Festival
By James Denselow 5th Aug 2026
Budding bakers of all ages are being invited to put their skills to the test as the popular Bake Off competition returns to the Hitchin Food Festival this September.
Taking place over the festival weekend on Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 September, the competition will once again feature separate events for young bakers and amateur adults, with organisers encouraging as many local residents as possible to take part.
Saturday's family-friendly competition is split into two age categories – eight and under and nine to 16 years old – with this year's challenge titled "Terrific Traybake."
Young entrants are invited to create their own signature traybake, whether that's brownies, flapjacks, a decorated tray cake or another creative bake. Bakers should submit either one standard 23cm x 33cm rectangular traybake or one 20cm square traybake by 2.45pm on Saturday 5 September.
The entries will be displayed for visitors to admire during the festival before being judged by an expert panel.
On Sunday 6 September, the spotlight turns to amateur adult bakers with the "Great British Biscuit Bonanza."
Contestants are challenged to reinvent a classic British biscuit, with organisers encouraging plenty of creativity. Whether inspired by Bourbons, Custard Creams, Hobnobs, Penguins or even the ever-debated Jaffa Cake, bakers are free to put their own twist on a traditional favourite.
Adult competitors should submit six biscuits by 2.45pm on Sunday for judging and public display.
The top three entries in each competition will be invited onto the Festival Stage, where prizes will be presented to the winners.
Organisers say they are particularly keen to inspire the next generation of bakers through the children's competition, encouraging young people to develop a love of cooking and baking from an early age.
Anyone wishing to enter must register by Friday 14 August. There is a £5 entry fee, with all proceeds going to charity. Entrants will receive payment details after registration has closed and the final list of contestants has been confirmed.
