Fraudsters targeting people in car parks

Herts Police are warning people to be vigilant when paying to park in car parks in our town and elsewhere.

With Hitchin being such a 'destination visit' with our town centre packed with outstanding independent businesses offering top quality food and drink and shopping opportunities, scammers are being drawn to the area.

Herts Police warn: "People are being approached by fraudsters and asked to help pay for parking because the fraudster doesn't have a bank card, they may offer to pay the victim cash in return.

"The fraudster may then claim that the bank card isn't working and ask for the victim's date of birth or may watch the victim use the card and enter their PIN.

"Very quickly, the fraudster makes off with the bank card and may withdraw large sums of money from the victim's bank account.

"Please don't let this happen to you."

Extra caution is being urged for those visiting town centre car parks including St Mary's car park, Brand Street car park, the Lairage and Hitchin Swimming Centre.
