Hitchin has been the backdrop to a number of film shoots, from Dr Foster to Nationwide adverts to name but two - but a new genre came to town this week: Bollywood.

Visitors to the town centre over the last few days - St Mary's Church to be precise - may have been intrigued to see film crews, complete with actors and lighting equipment shoot scenes.

Nub News can reveal why: A Bollywood flick came to film at St Mary's.

Hindi cinema, often known as Bollywood is the prolific Indian Hindi-language film industry, which produces the world's largest number of feature films annually - and they chose Hitchin as the backdrop to their latest effort.

Our regular weekend columnist A Churchwarden Writes takes up the story, telling Hitchin Nub News: "A call came into the church office, which ended up the very next day with a large film crew, a fleet of vans and a generator to power the lighting rig arriving in the Churchyard.

"The producers wanted to film a few scenes in a typically English church and, after making sure that the script was ok, St Mary's was chosen as the best location."

Nub News has learned that the film's working title is 'John Kennedy' (not the American President who was shot) and it's intended for release in four languages.

The director, R S Vimal is an award winner with Malayalam Movies, the lead actor is Prabhu Deva, a famous choreographer and dancer.

A Churchwarden writes: "We hope to eventually have a copy of the film!

PS: The big screen is coming to St Mary's this week, in more ways than one.

Don't forget that St Mary's is gearing up for it's own cinema offer on Saturday, when their Silent Film night returns after a two year break.

With a giant screen put up in the nave, the evening features live improvised music performed by the 'House' Organist at the Odeon Leicester Square, virtuoso player Donald MacKenzie, who has appeared for numerous star-studded film premieres and Royal film screenings.
