Hertfordshire County Council is proposing changes in Stevenage Old Town along the high street.

Two public consultations will be running, with the county council also aiming to alter the bus concourse in front of the Lister Hospital.

Herts County Council say: "The aim of the Old Town scheme is to create a safer, more pleasant place for everyone to enjoy and spend time, by making it easier and more convenient for people to walk, wheel and cycle.

"Proposals include new safer crossing points, a 'plaza' style area outside Simmons Bakers, and better access to and from bus stops, including a new stop southbound at the southern end of the High Street."

As part of its Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP), the County Council is also proposing a new mobility hub at the Lister Hospital to reorganise the existing space, cater for more buses and higher passenger numbers, and provide a better experience for people travelling to and from the site.

The two consultations on the Old Town High Street and the Lister Hospital mobility hub are running in parallel. Both the Active Travel Fund covering the Old Town proposals, and the BSIP covering the Lister Hospital plans, are fully funded by the Department for Transport.

Throughout 2023, the County Council engaged with local businesses, residents and students about the opportunities to improve the High Street for everyone. This feedback has helped to develop the designs from initial sketches to detailed technical designs.

Phil Bibby, Executive Member for Highways and Transport, Hertfordshire County Council, said: "We're grateful to everyone who responded to the initial consultation on the Old Town High Street last summer and provided their feedback on the proposals.

"We want journeys to and from the High Street, the Lister Hospital and around the rest of Stevenage to be safer, easier and more enjoyable. We are now asking for feedback on these detailed proposals to finalise our designs.

"I would encourage residents, visitors and businesses to review the materials over the coming weeks and respond to both surveys."
