EXCLUSIVE: Consultation begins to share proposals on plan to demolish former M&Co site in Hitchin High Street and build 46 apartments

Hitchin Nub News understands that a consultation on the future of a prime site in Hitchin town centre is taking place today, Wednesday (April 10) and will run until April 24 - ahead of a pending planning application set to be submitted by Bellborough Limited.

As Nub News has previously reported, the site at 9-10 High Street in Hitchin has been vacant since M&Co vacated the store after the clothing chain appointed administrators in a failed bid to save its ailing business.

In a private letter addressed only to town centre residents and businesses seen by Hitchin Nub News, the consultation initially runs from 1pm to 8pm today (Wednesday April 10) - but will be open until April 24.

The confidential letter says: "The emerging scheme for the property is to demolish the existing building and reconstruct a better designed building retaining retail fronting the High Street, which could accommodate one or two retailers and approximately 46 one and two bed residential units."

The correspondence also adds: "The owners have had pre-application advice from North Herts Council and the exhibition material responds to the feedback received from the council and the conservation area officer."

The consolation will be open until April 24.
