Council issues winter warning to help residents prevent damp and mould

Residents across Hitchin and the wider district are being urged to take action to prevent damp and mould in their homes this winter, as colder weather increases the risk of condensation and related problems.

North Herts Council says damp and mould can have a serious impact on both physical and mental wellbeing, with babies, young children, older residents and people with conditions such as asthma particularly vulnerable.

The council has highlighted that condensation is the most common cause of damp in rented properties. If it isn't dealt with early, it can quickly lead to mould growth.

Simple steps to reduce damp and mould

Residents are encouraged to take a few practical measures at home, including:

  • Cook smart – keep lids on pans and use extractor fans to reduce moisture.
  • Dry clothes wisely – dry laundry outdoors where possible. If drying indoors, keep the door shut and a window open.
  • Heat your home evenly – regular, consistent heating helps keep walls warm and limits condensation.
  • Avoid brushing or vacuuming mould – this can release spores into the air and worsen breathing problems.
  • Treat mould early – use a fungicidal wash available from DIY stores or supermarkets.

Council commitment

Mick Debenham, Executive Member for Regulatory at North Herts Council, said: "We know how harmful damp and mould can be, especially for vulnerable residents. That's why North Herts Council is committed to supporting tenants and working with landlords to tackle these issues quickly and effectively."

Tackling damp and mould is a key part of the council's Tenants' Charter. Residents who believe damp or mould in their home is linked to a repair or construction issue — and feel their landlord is not taking action — can seek further help from the council.

More information and a dedicated questionnaire are available on the council's website under Damp, mould and heating.
