Council responds to criticism around Hitchin parking fines

Following a reported 42% rise in parking fines issued in Hitchin and the surrounding area, North Herts Council has responded to concerns, acknowledging teething issues with the rollout of its new parking system and outlining steps being taken to support residents.
Cllr Donna Wright, North Herts Exec Member for Place said: "We understand that adapting to a new parking system can take time, and we've already received feedback from residents which has helped us identify areas where further guidance is needed".
"While many people are already using the new pay-on-exit machines successfully, we recognise that some features – particularly the 'Check in / Check out' function – have caused confusion for a number of users".
"We've taken a balanced approach during this initial rollout period, giving people the benefit of the doubt where possible, and only issuing fines when necessary. We're also continuing to improve signage, update FAQs, and develop clearer step-by-step video guides to help people feel more confident when using the machines on our website".
Our aim is to make parking easier, not harder – and we're committed to making sure this system works well for everyone."
The statement comes amid growing criticism from local councillors and residents who claim the surge in fines is both unfair and symptomatic of poor communication about the new system.
