A curious cairn terrier was safely reunited with its owner after wandering onto a railway embankment near Hitchin, thanks to a coordinated rescue involving Network Rail and British Transport Police.

Maddie the dog sparked concern after straying into dense undergrowth beside the railway on Tuesday 21 July, where she risked reaching the live tracks. Network Rail's response team, assisted by a police drone, was able to locate the missing pet before mobile operations manager Martin Mason coaxed her to safety.

The drone provided live aerial images of the embankment, allowing rescuers to pinpoint Maddie's location despite the thick vegetation.

Network Rail said the incident had no impact on train services but is using the story to remind dog owners of the dangers of walking pets near railway lines.

Martin Mason said: "We all recognise accidents can happen and dogs can sometimes slip their leads or become loose. While we're delighted this story had a happy ending, animals on the railway can create significant safety risks and lead to potential train service disruption.

"We would encourage all pet owners to keep dogs secure when near the railway."

The rescue also highlights the growing role of drone technology in keeping the railway safe. As well as helping recover animals in difficult-to-reach locations, drones are used to spot trespassers, assess damage after lineside fires and inspect areas affected by flooding more quickly and safely.

Network Rail says the technology helps reduce delays by allowing incidents to be assessed and resolved more efficiently, while improving safety for both the public and railway staff.

The organisation is urging anyone walking dogs close to railway lines to ensure pets remain securely on their leads and away from embankments or fencing.
