A road connecting Hitchin and Stevenage was closed during rush-hour this morning (Monday, October 3) after a serious incident.

A four car collision occurred on the A602 just before 730am that resulted in two people being hospitalised after firefighters extricated a trapped person inside a vehicle following the smash.

Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "We were called at 753am this morning to reports of a road traffic collision on the A602 Corey's Mill roundabout in Stevenage.

"Two fire engines from Stevenage fire station were sent to the scene, where crews found a collision involving four vehicles, with one person trapped.

"Firefighters stabilised the vehicles, and extricated one person from a vehicle before handing them over to the East of England Ambulance Service."

The East of England Ambulance Service confirmed the stricken pair were taken to the Lister Hospital.

A spokesperson said: "We were called at 7.29am today to a road traffic collision on the A602 in Stevenage. Two ambulances were sent to the scene and transported two patients to the Lister Hospital."

Herts Police closed the area between Stevenage Road and the A1M in both directions that sparked large queues of traffic, with delays of up to 40 minutes while the Ambulance Service and Herts Fire and Rescue Service attended.

Officers have confirmed the road is now open once again.

A spokesperson for Herts Police said: "Police were called just after 7.30am today (Monday 3 October) to reports of a multiple vehicle collision on Wymondley Bypass in Stevenage. Officers put a road closure in place to allow the ambulance service and fire and rescue service to attend the scene.

"A van, along with a white Citroen, grey Toyota and silver Vauxhall were involved in the collision. Three of the vehicles were recovered and the road was re-opened at 856am."
