Firefighters spent hours overnight attempting to quell a large blaze at a recycling site in Hitchin.

Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed it was called to Bridge Works, Cadwell Lane, Hitchin late on Monday evening (December 11).

A number of crews attended with the brigade asking people living close by to keep their windows and doors closed to protect from any noxious and/or toxic substances released by the blaze.

"Our crews have been working extremely hard tackling this fire and are making steady progress," they said.
