Football fans unite to help courageous grief-stricken sisters through emotional speech before League One clash between Stevenage and Blackpool
Football fans united to help grief stricken sisters at the League One match this afternoon between Stevenage and Blackpool.
Courageous sisters Sophie and Holly Sharpe spoke movingly before kick-off at Broadhall Way about their injured brother Liam, and tragic pal Ollie Gatfield, who sadly died on his way back from a Stevenage match last month.
The inspirational pair paid a warm and fulsome tribute to their late friend in front of a large crowd at the Lamex before the clash between Steve Evans' Boro and their visitors from Blackpool.
When her voice faltered through grief, the stadium PA Jay Drackford and both sets of fans immediately rallied to help the brave youngsters continue with the powerful tribute with applause.
Stevenage director Stuart Dinsey said before the match: "Our first thoughts must go to two young Stevenage supporters, Ollie Gatfield and Liam Sharpe.
"19-year-old Ollie tragically lost his life in a car accident three weeks ago. His friend 18-year-old Liam was in the car with Ollie and has been in a critical condition fighting hard since and making progress."
Mr Dinsey added that everyone at the club and in the town sends their condolences to Ollie's friends and family, while also wishing Liam a full recovery.
Big-hearted Stevenage fans, as well as the wider community have already helped raise more than £11,000 for a GoFundMe page set up in the aftermath of Ollie's tragic death, raising £5,000 in the first 24 hours.
