As Hitchin Nub News reported last summer, the reason why a national chain made the decision to leave Hitchin was due to high rents.

The Works, a retailer of value gifts, arts, crafts, toys, books and stationery, closed its doors for good towards the end of August, 2023.

As we stated at the time, according to a well-placed source at the store, the company failed to renegotiate its Bancroft lease with its landlord, forcing the store to close its doors for good on Friday, August 25.

Along with plenty of others in Hitchin town centre the site has been empty ever since.

However, the site at 11a Bancroft has now been listed for let, with the 3,704 sqft unit now on the market, listed by S.R. Wood & Son - and can be let for £120,000 per annum.

Hitchin Nub News spoke to a retailer in our town centre who scoffed: "Good luck with finding a willing partner at that price in the current climate - no wonder so many shops are empty."
