A group of friends are preparing to walk 100 miles across the South Downs to raise money for the hospital charity supporting a well-known Hitchin man after he was diagnosed with stage four lymphoma.

Twenty-seven-year-old Josh, described by friends as "one of the biggest personalities around" and someone "who's always been there for everyone else", is preparing to undergo aggressive chemotherapy following his devastating diagnosis.

In a heartfelt fundraising appeal, Josh's friends say it is now their turn to support someone who has spent years helping others without expecting anything in return.

The appeal reads: "If you're from Hitchin, there's a good chance you know Josh. He's one of the biggest personalities around and genuinely one of the best people you could ever meet."

It continues: "He's the sort of person who would pop round to your nan's house to fix her sink simply because he wants to help. If you were ever stuck somewhere at 3am on a Saturday night, Josh would be the first person to jump in his car and come and get you, no questions asked."

To show their support, Josh's close friends George, George, Louis, Luke and Will will take on the 100-mile South Downs Way, walking from Winchester to Eastbourne over three days.

Every penny raised will go to the Addenbrooke's Charitable Trust, which supports Addenbrooke's Hospital by funding enhanced patient care, pioneering research, specialist equipment and services beyond standard NHS funding.

The friends said: "In what should be the prime of his life, Josh is now preparing to face the toughest battle anyone could imagine.

"All money raised will go to Addenbrooke's Charitable Trust, whose doctors, nurses and specialists are providing Josh with his treatment and care. Your donation will help support vital cancer services, groundbreaking research and ensure future patients receive the best possible care."

They added: "No donation is too small. If you're unable to donate, simply sharing this page would mean the world to us."
