Two Letchworth projects have been awarded grants to help residents get creative, active, and connected.

The Letchworth Educational Settlement has received £1,590 to buy six new sewing machines for its planned beginner courses. The workshops, starting on Saturday mornings, will give people the chance to try sewing without the upfront cost of buying a machine.

Nigel Carrick, a Trustee at The Settlement, said: "Sewing courses at the Settlement are very popular. We know there are those who would like to learn but are unable to purchase a machine. This grant will allow us to run taster workshops and short courses as an introduction to developing this satisfying and fulfilling skill."

The Settlement, which has been offering adult learning for more than a century, hopes the starter sessions will grow into longer 10-week courses throughout the year.

Meanwhile, Saracens Sport Foundation has been awarded £1,508 to continue its popular Love to Dance programme at Jackmans Community Centre. The weekly 90-minute sessions, designed for over-50s, combine fitness with fun and aim to tackle social isolation.

Classes are held on Monday mornings and provide a welcoming space for people to stay active, learn new routines, and build friendships. The funding will cover hall hire, a professional dance teacher, admin staff, a music licence, refreshments, and equipment such as a new speaker.

Jessica Hammond, Senior Development Manager for Saracens Foundation, said:

"These classes are more than just dance, they're a lifeline for many women and men over 50, offering movement, laughter, and meaningful connection."

Cllr Daniel Allen, Leader of North Herts Council, praised the initiatives:

"It's fantastic to see local charities creating such positive opportunities. These grants will help people get active, learn new skills, and stay connected—all things that support wellbeing and resilience."

Both projects highlight the role of local organisations in strengthening Letchworth's community spirit.
