Have your say on plans for 20mph speed limits across parts of Hitchin
By James Denselow 19th Jun 2026
Residents are being invited to have their say on proposals to introduce new 20mph speed limits on dozens of residential streets across Hitchin as part of Hertfordshire County Council's wider road safety programme.
The consultation, which is now open through Hertfordshire County Council's Let's Talk Transport platform, outlines plans for a new 20mph area covering a large number of residential roads in the town. The scheme forms part of the county's expanding 20mph programme, which aims to create safer neighbourhoods, reduce road danger and encourage more walking and cycling.
Detailed plans published by the council show a proposed 20mph zone and speed limit covering streets across several Hitchin neighbourhoods. Residents can view maps of the affected roads and submit feedback before any final decision is made.
Hertfordshire County Council says the programme is designed to improve road safety, create calmer streets and make it easier for people to choose active travel options such as walking and cycling. The authority points to evidence suggesting lower speeds can help reduce the severity of collisions and improve conditions for pedestrians and cyclists.
The Hitchin proposals are part of a much larger county-wide rollout. Earlier this year the council announced plans to expand 20mph areas across almost 300 neighbourhoods in Hertfordshire, with additional funding earmarked to accelerate delivery over the next two years.
As with previous 20mph schemes elsewhere in the county, the proposals are likely to generate debate among residents, with supporters arguing they improve safety and opponents questioning their effectiveness and impact on drivers.
Residents can view the full proposals and take part in the consultation via Hertfordshire County Council's Let's Talk Transport website.
