Heavy snow showers with freezing temperatures well below freezing are expected across Hitchin and north Herts from this afternoon (Monday, 8 February).

While our area escaped with little more than a light dusting of snow over the weekend, despite the Met Office amber weather warning, heavy snow showers and freezing temperatures are now predicted from 4pm this afternoon until 2am tomorrow.

Forecasters are warning of roads being blocked by heavy snow while yellow warnings for snow and ice will remain in place until Wednesday evening.

National Rail has told passengers that services are likely to be affected while the AA has warned of treacherous driving conditions.

The Met Office explained that the cold snap was as a result of bitterly cold strong easterly winds from the Ukraine reaching the UK.
