Motorcyclists from Hitchin and across Hertfordshire are being encouraged to saddle up for one of the region's biggest charity rides in support of Essex & Herts Air Ambulance this September.

The charity's annual Motorcycle Run takes place on Sunday 6 September, bringing together thousands of riders from across Essex, Hertfordshire and beyond to raise vital funds for the life-saving emergency service.

The fully marshalled ride will begin at North Weald Airfield before travelling to Kings Farm in Chelmsford, where participants will join the Essex & Herts Air Ambulance Whirly Birds Family Fun Day.

Open to solo riders, pillion passengers, groups and motorcycle clubs, organisers say the event offers a chance to enjoy a scenic ride while helping to fund the charity's 24-hour emergency medical service.

Essex & Herts Air Ambulance relies entirely on donations to operate, receiving no government or National Lottery funding. Its crews of pilots, critical care paramedics and pre-hospital care doctors provide advanced treatment at the scene of serious incidents across Hertfordshire, Essex and surrounding areas.

The charity responded to 106 motorcycle-related incidents during 2025, underlining the importance of rapid specialist care for riders across the region.

Adam Carr, Critical Care Paramedic at Essex & Herts Air Ambulance, said: "As both a biker and a paramedic, the Motorcycle Run is always a highlight for me.

"I've taken part in the event for many years and have seen first-hand the incredible sense of community that exists within the biking world. Every rider taking part is helping ensure Essex & Herts Air Ambulance can continue delivering advanced emergency care to those who need it most.

"Having attended incidents involving motorcyclists throughout my career, I know just how important it is that specialist critical care can reach patients quickly. The Motorcycle Run is a fantastic opportunity to enjoy a great day out with fellow riders while helping to fund a service that is there for people when they need it most."

Mark Jarman-Howe, Chief Executive of Essex & Herts Air Ambulance, added: "The Motorcycle Run has always been a hugely special event for us and for the biking community that has supported Essex & Herts Air Ambulance for so many years.

"As a charity that receives no government or National Lottery funding, events like this play an important role in helping us continue providing life-saving care across our region. Whether you're riding on your own, with friends, as part of a motorcycle club or alongside fellow enthusiasts, we'd love to welcome you to take part."

Registration costs £20 per motorcycle or £25 for a bike carrying a pillion passenger. Every rider will receive an exclusive event snood, while participants are encouraged to raise at least £20 in sponsorship.

The ride concludes with entry to the Whirly Birds Family Fun Day, which will feature live entertainment, family activities, food and drink, motorcycle displays and fundraising attractions. Tickets are also available for those wishing to attend the family event without taking part in the ride.
