A charity supporting some of the most vulnerable people across Hertfordshire – including those facing domestic abuse, food and fuel poverty, debt, mental health challenges and social isolation – has been named as Hertfordshire Constabulary's first ever Charity of the Year.

Hertfordshire Community Foundation (HCF) was personally selected by Chief Constable Andy Prophet following a visit where he learned more about the charity's work supporting grassroots organisations across the county, including groups working in and around Hitchin.

Chief Constable Prophet said the decision was an easy one after seeing the impact HCF has on local communities.

"When I visited Hertfordshire Community Foundation and heard about the fantastic support they provide to community groups and charities across Hertfordshire, I knew I wanted to do something to help," he said.

"HCF funds projects helping some of the most vulnerable people in the county, so it is clear to see how their work supports our work – supporting people affected by crime as well as addressing issues that may result in people turning to crime."

Throughout 2026, officers and staff from Hertfordshire Constabulary will take part in a range of fundraising activities – from family fun days to charity bake-offs – with all proceeds going to HCF. It marks the first time the constabulary has officially adopted a charity of the year.

"It's a first for us to have a chosen charity for the year," added Chief Constable Prophet, "so I look forward to us boosting charity funds as well as 'Team Herts' morale with some fun fundraising schemes."

Paul Robin, Chief Executive Officer of Hertfordshire Community Foundation, said the charity was delighted to be chosen.

"We are incredibly grateful to Hertfordshire Constabulary for choosing Hertfordshire Community Foundation as their beneficiary charity for 2026," he said.

"The funds raised will make a real difference to local people facing some of the toughest challenges in our communities, while also strengthening the vital small grassroots charities that support them every day."

He added that many of the organisations funded by HCF work closely with people affected by crime or help address the underlying issues that can lead to it, playing a key role in building safer and more resilient communities across Hertfordshire.

Founded in 1988, Hertfordshire Community Foundation has awarded more than £35 million in grants to local charities, community groups and families in crisis. The funding comes from donations by local individuals, families and organisations who want to make Hertfordshire a better place for everyone.

For community groups and residents in Hitchin and the surrounding area, the partnership is expected to bring both increased funding and greater awareness of the vital work being done on the ground throughout the county.
