For a second year running, coronavirus looks likely to cause the postponement of scheduled local elections for 2021.

Local elections are still due to take place in May, but the government will keep the matter under review, according to the Cabinet Office.

Concerns have been circulating that mayoral and local authority elections could be postponed for a second year in a row because of the coronavirus pandemic.

A spokesperson cautioned that the matter would be kept 'under review', with a chance they could be postponed.

Last year's local elections were postponed to avoid having to send people out to the polls or on the campaign trail, and to allow local authorities to concentrate on the unfolding outbreak.

However, the Cabinet Office has confirmed this week, that, at this stage, the government is still intending local elections to go ahead, as planned, on Thursday, May 6.

Local elections scheduled for Thursday, May 7, 2020 were postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic set to take place on Thursday, May 6, 2021.

The elections across north Hertfordshire were to elect members to both the county council and parish councils.

In addition the postponed 2020 elections to the district council, elections for the town and parish councils, and the police and crime commissioner for Hertfordshire were also set to take place on the same day.

District council elections will be held in each of the following wards where voters will be electing one councillor in each ward:

Baldock East

Chesfield

Hitchin Highbury

Hitchin Priory

Hitchwood, Offa and Hoo

Letchworth East

Letchworth South East

Letchworth Wilbury

North Herts District Council have been contacted for comment.
