A major supermarket with a store in Hitchin has started rationing vegetables - but don't panic say shoppers

Hitchin Asda on Queen Street is now limiting sales of tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers.

The supermarket announced the move this week in response to supply chain issues, as well as extreme weather conditions facing producers.

Hitchin Nub News visited the store on Queen Street on Wednesday evening, and spoke to an Asda shopper.

"It's a little inconvenient but I'm not panic buying elsewhere," a mum told us. "It's not the end of the world. Just eat different things.

"It's only for a couple of weeks. My advice would be to try different vegetables - try swapping a cucumber for a courgette - you might enjoy it.."

The full list of products which shoppers are being limited to buying three of are tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, lettuce, broccoli, cauliflowers, salad bags and raspberry punnets.

Extreme weather in Spain and north Africa, have impacted the harvests coming out of those countries, with supplies due to be low for several more weeks.

Other supermarkets in Hitchin, such as Marks & Spencers on Bancroft, had plenty of tomatoes and lettuces today, with the company saying they have sourced from other markets not hit by bad weather.
