Garden House Hospice Care has announced it will close one of its shops in Hitchin after deciding it was no longer financially viable.

The charity has confirmed its Fairfield shop and Threads shop in Churchgate will both close on Wednesday, September 2.

Garden House Hospice Care said the decision had been a difficult one, but stressed that its retail operation exists to generate funds for the care and support it provides to patients and families.

The charity said it had invested significantly in trying to make the Fairfield shop sustainable, including carrying out a recent refit, making changes to the shop's concept and introducing different product ranges.

Meanwhile, the Threads team had built what the hospice described as a "brilliant standalone brand and loyal following" at its Churchgate location.

However, despite the work of staff and volunteers at both shops, Garden House Hospice Care said neither was financially viable as a standalone operation.

A spokesperson said: "Our shops exist for one purpose: to make a profit for Garden House Hospice Care, helping fund the care and support we provide to patients, families and people who need us.

"To protect that care, we must make sure every part of our retail operation is financially sustainable."

The charity emphasised that the closures were not a reflection on the staff and volunteers who have worked at the shops.

It added: "We are so grateful to them, and to every customer, donor and supporter who has been part of these shops."

Threads will not disappear from Hitchin altogether. The brand will continue through a dedicated concession within Garden House Hospice Care's Bancroft store, while the charity also plans to hold Threads pop-up events in the future.

The Fairfield and Churchgate closures will take place on Wednesday, September 2, with the charity thanking customers for their understanding and continued support.

Garden House Hospice Care provides free specialist palliative care and support to patients, families and carers across North Hertfordshire and surrounding areas.
