A Hitchin church known for hosting one of the town's most popular Christmas events has launched a £30,000 fundraising appeal to replace its ageing heating system.

Holy Saviour Church, home of the annual Hitchin Christmas Tree Festival, hopes to begin installing the new system in October 2026.

The festival attracts thousands of visitors and brings together families, charities, community groups and businesses, with dozens of creatively decorated trees filling the church.

Almost 2,900 people attended in 2019, and organisers say visitor numbers have now returned to pre-Covid levels.

However, the church's current heating system needs replacing to ensure the building remains warm and comfortable for those attending the festival and the many other activities held there throughout the year.

The Warm Church Appeal is seeking support from the congregation, wider community and local businesses.

Fundraising co-ordinator Tim Stalkartt said: "The Christmas Tree Festival is such a special part of our local community. It brings thousands of people through the church doors and brings together organisations and people from right across the area.

"We want to make sure that people can continue to enjoy the festival and other events here in a church that is warm, welcoming and comfortable.

"We have already had some very encouraging support, but we still need to raise £30,000. We are hoping that local people and businesses will get behind the appeal and help us reach our target."

People can support the campaign by donating, promoting the appeal or sponsoring an individual part of the new heating system.

Components available for sponsorship include heaters, thermostats, smart buttons, smart relays and the central control hub.

The church is particularly hoping to hear from Hitchin businesses interested in making a donation or becoming a sponsor.

Fundraising co-ordinator Debbie Stalkartt said: "We would love local businesses to become part of this project. The church is a community space and the Christmas Tree Festival is a great example of what can happen when local people and organisations come together.

"Every contribution will make a difference and help us get the new heating installed in time for the winter."

The campaign also features posters starring the church's popular Eric and Edna characters, which supporters are being encouraged to display and share.
