Hitchin families invited to give outgrown children's clothes and toys another life with free seven-day challenge
By Karolina Gudes 9th Oct 2026
Families in Hitchin and surrounding North Hertfordshire communities are being invited to take part in a completely free seven-day challenge to sort through outgrown children's belongings, reduce waste and make space before Christmas.
Called Outgrown, Not Wasted, the initiative encourages parents to look again at children's clothes, toys, books, shoes and baby equipment that may still be useful, even when their children have grown out of them.
Rather than attempting a major clear-out in one weekend, families can work through one category of belongings each day.
The first six days cover clothing, toys, books, baby equipment, shoes and accessories, and larger items. The final day is dedicated to deciding what happens to everything collected.
For each belonging, families are encouraged to choose one of five options: keep it, pass it on to another family, donate it, recycle it responsibly or sell it.
The challenge was created by Karolina Gudes, a mum of two from Broughton in North Wales and founder of Kidora, a UK family platform.
It grew from her own experience of watching perfectly usable children's belongings accumulate as her children grew, often leaving bags of clothing and toys waiting to be sorted.
Karolina said: "Children outgrowing something does not mean it has stopped being useful. A coat, toy or book that one child has finished with could be exactly what another family needs."
Hitchin already has local initiatives encouraging families to reuse children's belongings.
The NCT Herts North branch is holding a Nearly New Sale on Saturday 17 October 2026 at The Priory School on Bedford Road, with preloved children's clothing, toys and nursery equipment available.
The event offers families an opportunity to find second-hand essentials rather than always purchasing new items.
Earlier this year, Plastic Free Hitchin also worked with local primary and secondary schools to organise a preloved school-uniform sale, encouraging families to exchange useful clothing and reduce waste.
Both initiatives are entirely independent of Outgrown, Not Wasted, but demonstrate the value of keeping good-quality children's belongings in circulation.
For Hitchin parents, the seven-day challenge could begin with checking winter coats that no longer fit, sorting through books that have been outgrown or reviewing toys before Christmas presents arrive.
Children can participate by rediscovering favourite games and helping decide which suitable belongings they would be happy to share with another family.
The campaign reminds parents that baby equipment requires additional safety checks. Items should be inspected for damage, missing parts, safety warnings and product recalls before being donated, sold or passed on.
Kidora operates a UK parent-to-parent marketplace specialising in preloved baby and children's items, supporting local collection and nationwide delivery. However, selling is only one possible outcome of the challenge.
Participation is completely free, with no registration, payment or purchase required.
A printable seven-day checklist, posters and ready-made resources are also available for Hitchin schools, nurseries, PTAs and community organisations to share.
Families can begin the challenge whenever convenient and complete it at their own pace.
