Hitchin's very own version of the Repair Shop is open for bookings ahead of its return later this month.

The Repair Café at Hitchin Hackspace returns on Saturday, November 27 and is now open for bookings.

Following two successful Repair Cafés before the pandemic, the initiative is back up and running at Hitchin Hackspace on Bancroft in collaboration with Plastic Free Hitchin.

The BBC's much-loved workshop filled with expert craftspeople, bringing loved pieces of family history and the memories they hold back to life now has an equivalent in Hitchin - and they are open for bookings now.

In a heartwarming antidote to throwaway culture, the Repair Cafe at Hackspace Hitchin is entirely run by volunteers helping people to bring their damaged items to the Repair Café to be given a new lease of life, preventing thousands of repairable household items from going to landfill every year.

The event is an opportunity for the community to get together and get to know each other, providing space to help and learn from each other.

Organisers said: "We throw away vast amounts of stuff. Even things with almost nothing wrong, and which could get a new lease on life after a simple repair."

On the day of the event experts will be repairing electrical and mechanical items, hardware and software, clothing, fabrics, bikes and non-electrical items such as small furniture, toys, musical instruments.

The Repair Café also accepts small broken items that can easily be carried to and from the event by yourself.

However, only pre-booked items will be accepted, with a limit of one item per person.

Please note they we offer repairs, not restoration.

To ensure the safety of visitors and volunteers, the workshop will be observing health and safety procedures such as social distancing and mask-wearing as well as providing hand sanitiser and ensuring good ventilation.
