Hitchin hotter than Ibiza as sunseekers' queues snake around outdoor pool - Met Office issues weather warning

It's official! Hitchin is hotter than Ibiza today, Saturday (September 9).

The mercury in our town trumps the Balearic isle renowned for hedonism as sunskeers flock to Hitchin hotspots such as Windmill Hill, Bancroft and of course, the outdoor pool on Fishponds Road.

Hitchin tops the charts at a sweltering 31C, while Ibiza checks in at a 'mere' 27C.

As you can see from our Nub News photos, queues are snaking up towards the swimming pool car park, with Hitchin Town FC advising people that the overflow car park normally used during heatwaves is exclusively for football traffic today, as the Canaries are hosting Redditch United at Top Field at 3pm.

The weekend will continue a run of temperatures above 30C, with heat, flooding and air pollution warnings in place.

The UK has already had five days of temperatures above 30C in September for the first time, with that record likely to continue on Saturday and Sunday.

As a result, the UK Health Security Agency has issued an amber heat health alert.

The Met's yellow weather warning means some people could be in store for some flash flooding, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds, with possible interruptions to road access and public transport if such circumstances were to occur.
