Hitchin's iconic St Mary's Church has been lit up to support World Polio Day.

Rotary Club of Hitchin Tilehouse worked with the support of the church to raise awareness, funds and support in a bid to end polio.

The renowned club arranged to bathe St Mary's Church in purple light on Sunday evening to show solidarity with those working with the vaccine preventable disease that still threatens children in parts of the world today.

Hitchin Tilehouse Rotary told Hitchin Nub News: "Our club was very proud to mark World Polio Day locally and to recognise the work of Rotary and its partners and the millions of people involved in so many ways in the fight for a polio free world.

"Only together can we end polio, a virus that is still potentially just a plane ride away."

Many polio related activities have been using the colour purple, which has become a symbolic colour in the fight against polio, inspired by the colour of the dye painted on the little finger of a child to signify they have received a potentially life-saving polio vaccine.

It's not too late to donate to the campaign. Visit the club's Just Giving page here.
