Parents and carers in Hitchin can now apply for primary, junior and middle school places for September 2027, with families urged to submit their applications before the January deadline.

Hertfordshire County Council opened applications on Monday, November 2. The closing date is Friday, January 15, 2027.

Families can list up to four schools in preference order. The council advises parents to research admission rules carefully and consider how their child will travel to school before making their choices.

According to the council, 98 per cent of children were allocated a place at one of their four ranked primary, junior or middle schools last year.

Cllr Mark Watkin, cabinet member for education, SEND and inclusion, encouraged families to consider their options carefully.

He said: "I would urge parents and carers to carefully consider the schools they rank, to make realistic preferences and to visit local schools before applying."

Parents are encouraged to contact schools directly about open events and read the admissions guidance before submitting their applications.

Applications can be made online and amended until the closing date. Families without internet access can request a paper form, which must be returned directly to the council's Admissions and Transport team, rather than to a school.

School offers will be released on Friday, April 16, 2027, with parents required to accept or decline their offer by Friday, April 23.

The council warns that late applications are considered after those received on time, reducing the likelihood of securing a preferred school.
