Hitchin police set new priorities to tackle speeding, drugs and e-scooter use

Neighbourhood Policing Teams (NPTs) across North Herts have outlined the latest set of priorities for Hitchin after months of work responding to concerns raised by local residents.
Every four months, the teams review survey feedback and crime data to set their focus on the issues causing the most worry in the community – from anti-social behaviour to theft, speeding and drug-related crime.
What's been done in Hitchin recently
In the last period, officers concentrated on two main issues:
Speeding in Purwell Estate
Police carried out regular operations along Purwell Lane and Kingswood Avenue following reports from residents. Officers said they made "concerted efforts to make these streets safer for all."
ASB and drugs at Ransoms Rec and Triangle Garden
Targeted patrols were stepped up at the times of highest concern. These led to several stop and searches, the seizure of Class A and Class B drugs, and even the recovery of a motorbike stolen from Hemel Hempstead. One adult caution was issued.
New priorities for the next three months
Looking ahead, Hitchin Urban's policing team will focus on:
- Speeding – London Road (B656) from the Three Moorhens Roundabout to Broadmeadow Ride
- Drug-related ASB – Westmill Estate, particularly Redhill Road
- E-scooters – Unlawful use around the Hitchin Urban area
Wider policing in North Herts
Alongside the NPT, North Herts is also supported by response officers, detectives investigating crimes such as burglary and robbery, and specialist units tackling issues including domestic abuse. Local teams can also call on countywide resources when needed.
