Hitchin town has a new Safer Neighbourhood Sergeant

Sergeant Taranvir Gill (Taz) is replacing Safer Neighbourhood Sergeant in North Herts, Guy Westwood, who is off to take up a new challenge within the force after more than 15 years in the same role.

Taz will now be working out of Hitchin Police Station and managing the team of PCS and PCSOs who look after Hitchin and the rural hamlets and villages that surround the town, after being part of policing in North Herts for eight years.

Commenting on his new role Taz said: "I really enjoy neighbourhood policing because it provides us with an opportunity to problem-solve in the longer term, getting to know and understand the communities we serve."

"I'm looking forward to continuing Guy's great work and getting out and about in the town and its surrounding villages. Working in neighbourhood policing gives you a real sense of fulfilment knowing that your work can really make a difference to people's lives.

Prior to joining the SNT in Hitchin, Taz worked as an intervention sergeant covering North Hertfordshire, overseeing and assisting with the response to 999 calls reported by the public. As a PC he worked in Royston as a Neighbourhood Officer and also as a response officer for five years before that.

Sergeant Westwood is joining the Prevention First Team at police headquarters in Welwyn Garden City, which focusses on preventing crime and reducing the number of potential victims.

Guy joined the SNT in Hitchin in 2007 and is well known in the local area.

He said: "I have loved working in local policing as it enables you to really make a difference to the community, especially when it comes to tackling ongoing issues.

"Being able to work with partner agencies to solve a long term issue is particularly satisfying. I will miss my colleagues immensely, but I know they are in safe hands."
