Hitchin weather: Met Office alert on storms and 'exceptional rainfall'

How many of you in Hitchin witnessed the spectacular lightning late on Tuesday evening?

While no rain fell in our area, the mesmerising cloud-to-ground strikes were a sight to behold - with thunderstorm warnings remaining for the town on Wednesday.

With hot temperatures forecast once again the alerts are in place after the Met Office issued a yellow storm warning.

The advice means you should be on alert for flash flooding and building damage from lightning strikes as well as be aware of rising floodwaters and dangerous hailstones.

The alert also means beware of possible delays to public transport, difficult driving conditions and potential road closures - while in extreme cases deep and fast-flowing floodwater could be a threat to life.

Chief meteorologist Steve Ramsdale said: "Exceptional rainfall totals could be seen of 60 millimetres in an hour with a very small chance of 150 millimetres of rainfall in three or four hours" in certain areas.

Heatwave conditions are forecast to continue in Hitchin, with a top temperature of 31C expected.
