Hitchin's Market Theatre issues rallying cry as lockdown starts: 'We will be back'

Hitchin's popular Market Theatre has sent a lockdown message to its patrons.

Along with many establishments in our town, the site on Sun Street has been forced to shut its doors due to the second national lockdown of 2020.

With the shutdown coming into force, today, Thursday, until Wednesday, December 2, the theatre issued a statement informing people that it would be closing its live shows and kids clubs.

"Following the government's latest decision to lock down again we are sadly closing our doors for the time being," they explained.

"This is devastating for us after such a fantastic response to our re-opening in September. However, we will be back and we still hope to open the Adult Panto on December 4 until February 27.

"A huge thank you to those that have returned to us over the past couple of months, or who have donated to our crowdfunding campaign.

"Our future still remains uncertain, so your support is needed now more than ever."

Market Theatre launched a fundraising campaign last month, aiming to reach a target of £60k to ensure the site continues beyond this Christmas.

In only a short time, nearly £8,500 has been raised from generous supporters in the town and beyond as the theatre fights to stay in existence.
