Hitchin’s Hermitage Penguin Trail returns this December with festive puzzle and prizes
By James Denselow 16th Oct 2026
A festive penguin trail is coming to Hitchin town centre this December, inviting families and shoppers to solve a Christmas puzzle while exploring local businesses.
The Hermitage Penguin Trail will run throughout December, with 31 letters hidden in shop windows along the Hermitage.
Participants are challenged to find all 31 letters, write them down and rearrange them to reveal the answer to a well-known Christmas cracker joke.
To take part, residents can pick up a Penguin Trail Sheet from the Visit Hitchin Shop before heading out to hunt for the hidden letters.
Once the puzzle has been solved, completed sheets can be returned to the Visit Hitchin Shop for the chance to win a prize.
The trail offers a fun activity for children and families during the festive season, while encouraging people to explore Hitchin's independent shops and businesses.
Organisers have thanked Hitchin Property Trust for funding the painting of the shop windows and Bespoke Signs for providing the festive artwork.
The Hermitage Penguin Trail will run for the whole of December, giving residents and visitors plenty of time to join in the Christmas fun.
Can you find all 31 letters and crack the Christmas puzzle?
