Outdoor swimming returns to North Herts this weekend as Letchworth Lido reopens on Saturday 24 May for its landmark 90th season. Originally opened in 1935, the historic lido has been a beloved summer destination for generations of local residents.

The popular venue joins Hitchin lido, where early morning cold water swims are already underway.

Operated by Everyone Active in partnership with North Herts Council, both venues are set for a packed summer programme shaped by direct feedback from nearly 300 swimmers who took part in a customer survey at the end of last season.

At Letchworth Lido, improvements include upgraded signage, new parasols and umbrellas, extra spectator seating, new wetside equipment and refurbished training and party rooms.

The drainage system has also been improved and regular maintenance such as pool and exterior painting has been completed across the site.

The lido at Hitchin Swimming and Fitness Centre has also had a refresh, with the installation of new pool circulation pumps, new Everyone Active-branded deck chairs and a fun 'face in the hole' board.

Essential painting works have taken place and both sites are ready to welcome swimmers of all ages for a memorable summer in the water.

Customer Services Manager at Letchworth Lido, Susan Charter, said: "People ask me what I love about working at the Lido, my answer is 'what's not to love?' I am going into my 25th season and I cannot wait to open the doors to welcome the customers, old and new. I am excited to be a part of the Everyone Active team and to make this 90th milestone one to remember.

"I defy anyone to come to the Lido and not leave wanting to return. It's a place like no other, it feels like home. I have made friends for life and some of the staff are like family - some actually are! Come on season 2025, let's be having you!"

There are also new sessions and events lined up, with something for everyone to enjoy.

These include floating sound baths, pool parties, Rookie Lifeguarding courses, canoe club activities, and the return of the popular Summer Solstice celebration.

Quiet swims are being introduced for those seeking a more peaceful experience, and two early morning lane swim sessions a week will be offered at Hitchin lido.

Sarah Wright, General Manager at Letchworth Lido, added: "Letchworth Lido is a fantastic facility that is close to many customers' hearts. I am looking forward to working with Susan and the rest of the team over the summer months to offer an excellent service to members of the local community.

"We're proud to be launching a refreshed programme shaped by feedback, alongside a number of exciting upgrades, to ensure everyone can make the most of the season."

Season passes are available at Letchworth Lido, with unlimited swims priced at £100 for juniors and concessions, and £200 for adults.

Cllr Mick Debenham, Executive Member for Leisure, North Herts Council, said: "It's wonderful to see our much-loved lidos open for another summer – and a huge congratulations to Letchworth Lido on reaching its incredible 90th anniversary. These outdoor pools are a real gem in our community, and with new events, upgrades and feedback-led improvements, there's something for everyone to enjoy this season."
