Lib Dems - Churchgate redevelopment must include 40% affordable homes

As discussions continue around the future of the Churchgate shopping area in Hitchin, Liberal Democrat Group Leader, Cllr Ruth Brown, has spoken out in favour of a development approach that protects both public access and housing affordability.
With several options being considered by North Herts Council for the long-awaited regeneration of the Churchgate site and surrounding area, concerns have been raised about the potential loss of car parking spaces and the level of affordable housing to be included.
Cllr Brown told Hitchin Nub News that: "I would therefore favour the option which avoids reducing car parking capacity and believe that North Herts Council should insist on 40% affordable housing in the scheme, as is the policy adopted in the Local Plan."
Her comments reflect growing local interest in ensuring that any development supports Hitchin's vibrant town centre, while meeting housing needs and maintaining accessibility for residents and visitors alike.
