Lifesaving equipment to be available at every Hertfordshire Fire Station

By James Denselow 1st Aug 2025

Fire stations across Hertfordshire are now equipped with lifesaving defibrillators and bleed control kits thanks to a joint initiative by Hertfordshire County Council and local charity Hearts for Herts.

Fourteen new public access units have been installed at fire stations county-wide, providing crucial emergency equipment available 24/7. Each unit includes a defibrillator, a bleed kit, and a QR code linking to free CPR training and health resources. No specialist training is needed to use the equipment, which gives voice instructions and only delivers a shock when medically necessary.

The move forms part of a wider effort to improve emergency preparedness and follows the recent success of an installation in Hatfield, which was used within weeks of going live. The devices are mounted externally to allow quick and easy public access, and Hearts for Herts will oversee maintenance and a volunteer guardian network to keep each unit ready for use.

Councillor Ajanta Hilton, Executive Member for Public Health & Community Safety, said the project demonstrates a "shared commitment to public safety and community resilience." Hertfordshire's Chief Fire Officer Alex Woodman added that fire stations are ideal locations, offering both public access and protection for emergency workers themselves.

This marks Hearts for Herts' 75th installation milestone.

Founder Justin Honey-Jones praised community support, saying, "This really has been a community effort."

More information on local defibrillators and how to support the initiative is available at www.heartsforherts.co.uk.
