More than 112,000 free trees will be planted across Hertfordshire after thousands of residents signed up to this year's Your Tree Our Future campaign.

Hertfordshire County Council has announced that more than 4,500 residents have taken part in the 2026 scheme, collectively pledging to plant over 112,000 trees and almost 16 kilometres of hedgerow to boost biodiversity, improve air quality and strengthen the county's resilience to climate change.

The annual initiative, delivered in partnership with the county's district and borough councils and local charities, allows residents to claim up to five free native trees or a combination of trees and a hedgerow pack for their gardens or community spaces.

The council says this year's response demonstrates growing public support for improving Hertfordshire's natural environment, with the trees expected to provide habitats for wildlife, capture carbon and help create greener neighbourhoods for future generations.

Earlier this summer, North Herts residents were invited to apply for a share of 5,000 trees allocated to the district as part of the county-wide giveaway. The scheme offered a choice of eight native species, with residents also able to request hedgerow packs capable of planting six metres of hedge.

Councillor Paul Zukowskyj, Hertfordshire County Council's Executive Member for Environment, Transport and Growth, thanked everyone who had taken part.

He said the enthusiasm shown by residents would have a lasting impact on biodiversity, air quality and climate resilience across the county.

Applications for this year's giveaway have now closed, with successful applicants due to collect their trees from local distribution points on Saturday, 5 December. Residents who missed out can join the waiting list for next year's scheme.
